Eastward Ho! Country Club: A Storied Legacy of Golf and Coastal Elegance

Located in Chatham, Massachusetts, Eastward Ho! Country Club stands as a revered golfing institution with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1922. Nestled on the shores of Pleasant Bay, this private, member-owned club boasts an 18-hole, par 71 links-style golf course, offering breathtaking vistas and challenging play for its esteemed members and guests.

A Golfing Haven:

Designed by Englishman William Herbert Fowler and meticulously renovated by Keith Foster in 2004, Eastward Ho!'s championship golf links showcase the essence of coastal golfing. A links course, with its sandy soil and ever-changing sea breezes, offers a challenging and dynamic play experience. The layout, resembling an hourglass with the Clubhouse at its waist, provides panoramic views of the Atlantic to the east and the shores of Pleasant Bay to the west.

From Settlers to Seaside Resort:

The Club's location holds historical significance, as it was once part of Nickerson's Neck, where early settlers and the Nickerson family engaged in various enterprises. In the late 1800s, a grand summer hotel graced the area, attracting Boston's elite. Despite its eventual demise in 1910, traces of this Victorian-era marvel linger near the fourth green and fifth tee.

War Times and Evolution:

During World War I, a Naval Air Station occupied the land east of the present golf course, adding a unique chapter to the Club's history. Post-war, Cape Cod gained popularity as a summer resort, leading to the birth of Chatham Country Club, the precursor to Eastward Ho! A sea-side location was key, and the chosen site underwent construction between 1921 and 1924, opening for play in 1924.

Clubhouse Charm:

The Clubhouse, a blend of history and innovation, underwent transformations. The main structure, once Ensign Nickerson's homestead, offers a spectacular view of Pleasant Bay. Elements like the men's locker room and bar boast histories of their own, contributing to the timeless charm of Eastward Ho!

Securing Legacy:

Facing financial challenges in its early years, the Club experienced rescue missions that ensured its survival. Notably, Roy Tomlinson, then President of the National Biscuit Company, purchased the property, holding it until members could refinance. His act of generosity solidified Eastward Ho!'s enduring legacy.

Acknowledging Heritage:

Many individuals, including G.H. Windler, Charles Hardy, Oscar Nickerson, Wallace Donham, and more, played pivotal roles in preserving the Club's beauty. Today's members owe a debt of gratitude to these foresighted individuals.

Eastward Ho! Country Club stands not only as a haven for golf enthusiasts but also as a custodian of Cape Cod's rich history, offering a timeless blend of sporting excellence and coastal elegance.
