When SoWa Moves Indoors, the South End's November Calendar Moves With It

  • October 29, 2026

The SoWa Open Market holds its last Sunday of the year on November 15, filling 500 Harrison Avenue and the pedestrian stretch of Thayer Street from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no admission charge. Five days later, on Friday, November 20, the 11th annual SoWa Christmas Market opens next door inside the Power Station at 550 Harrison Avenue, with more than 100 makers, artists, designers and specialty food vendors under one roof.

The move indoors starts before those five days and runs well past them. From early November through late December, the South End's public calendar moves building by building: artist studios first, then the theater and gallery rooms on Tremont Street, then the Power Station, and finally a neighborhood square in December. Once you know the order, November reads like a timetable.

Two Fridays at 450 Harrison start the season

The first indoor event of the season has been on the calendar all year. On the first Friday of every month, the SoWa Artists Guild has more than 80 artists open their studios from 5 to 9 p.m. SoWa lists the buildings as 450 and 460 Harrison Avenue. The Meet Boston listing for the 2026 series runs from January 2 through December 4, so two First Fridays are left this year: November 6 and December 4.

November 6 does double duty. Kingston Gallery opens Sharon Kaitz's exhibition Dancing on the Edge on November 5 and holds its opening reception that Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., which falls inside the open-studio hours. The show stays up through November 29. So the first Friday of the month gives you the studios and a new gallery opening on the same evening, before the Sunday market has even closed.

The outdoor market's last weekend is also the Cyclorama's busiest

The week the outdoor market ends is also the week the Boston Center for the Arts runs its fullest schedule. The dates overlap closely:

Date Where What
Nov 10–15 BCA Calderwood Pavilion Cassie Wang's The Head Is Not the Star of the Body: On Tour!
Nov 13–15 BCA Cyclorama Boston Art Book Fair
Sun, Nov 15 500 Harrison Ave & Thayer St Final SoWa Open Market of 2026, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Tue, Nov 17 South Salon, Cyclorama Closing conversation of Da Gathering, 6 p.m.
Fri, Nov 20 Power Station, 550 Harrison Ave SoWa Christmas Market opening night, 4–9 p.m.

The Boston Art Book Fair runs Friday through Sunday, November 13 to 15, at the Cyclorama, so it ends the same day as the open-air market on Harrison. The BCA's Da Gathering series wraps up two days later with a 6 p.m. conversation in the Cyclorama's South Salon. Then the Power Station opens on Friday. Someone who keeps the second and third weeks of November free can go from a Sunday on Thayer Street to an art book fair under the Cyclorama dome to the first night of the holiday market without a week off in between.

The BCA's Mills Gallery also stays open through those weeks. Alice Miceli's Impenetrable Landscapes and Shima Taj Bakhsh's Soft Collapse both run through December 12.

The Power Station's hours are set for after work

Once the Christmas Market opens, its posted hours show who it expects to see. SoWa lists one schedule for November and a longer one starting December 1:

  • Opening night, November 20: 4 to 9 p.m.
  • November, Tuesday through Thursday: 4 to 8 p.m.
  • November, Friday: 4 to 9 p.m.
  • November, Saturday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Sundays all season: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Thanksgiving Day: closed
  • Black Friday, November 27: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • From December 1, Tuesday through Thursday: 4 to 9 p.m.
  • From December 1, Friday: 4 to 10 p.m.
  • From December 1, Saturday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Christmas Eve: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Mondays and Christmas Day: closed

Apart from Black Friday and Christmas Eve, the market doesn't open until 4 p.m. on weekdays, and in December the closing time moves an hour later on weeknights and Saturdays. Most of the market's open hours are evenings. Weekday mornings on Harrison Avenue stay quiet until the doors open in the afternoon, and Mondays the building is closed all day. The run ends December 27.

SoWa's page also has an older paragraph describing a "Winter Festival" spread over four weekends. The dated listing for 2026, with the full schedule above, is the Christmas Market, open from November 20 through December 27.

The tables around the corridor changed first

The streets around the Power Station changed before the market did. Several neighborhood tables opened or closed over the summer and early fall, so the regular stops along Harrison and Tremont look different this year.

At 600 Harrison Avenue, in the space Atlantico used to occupy, C'Yool Yemeni Cafe & Bakery was open by mid-September, serving Yemeni coffee, chai, breads and pastries, according to Boston Restaurant Talk. Boston Magazine identified the owner as Ahmed Mahmood of Bab Al-Yemen. With its coffee and pastry menu on Harrison Avenue, it's a natural stop before an afternoon at the market.

On Tremont, Brick Street Bagels moved into 570 Tremont Street, the former Aurora Market & Bakery space. Boston Restaurant Talk noted in July that the South End is where the business started as a pop-up, and reported it open by mid-September. The Brick Street Bagels site lists hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.

A few doors down, at 416 Tremont Street, Rome Pizza has closed after three decades. Boston Restaurant Talk reported the closing in September and shared the owners' farewell post:

"What has remained constant through all this years is the people. We want to thank everyone who has shared this journey with us, your support Kept our business going." George & Jocelyne

The same report describes the shop as mostly takeout, serving pizza, calzones, subs, steak tips and fish and chips. For thirty years it was a fixture of weeknight dinners on Tremont.

Over at Shore Leave, 11 William E. Mullins Way, chef Veo Robert's Lao pop-up Phaeng & Phiu is in residence five nights a week, with dishes that include krapow gai dumplings. Boston.com has the residency running through December. That means it lasts almost exactly as long as the Christmas Market, and it's another indoor stop on a December evening.

Openings still on the way

Some of the South End's most anticipated openings have yet to arrive. Bon Appétit listed George Mendes's Agosto with an expected November opening. It's a 45-seat tasting-menu restaurant with a chef's counter, cooking Portuguese food rooted in New England, with dishes such as corn chawanmushi with pickled Bangs Island mussels. The same piece says a bakery-café next door, Baby Sister, is planned for early 2027. Mendes is best known for Aldea, the Michelin-starred Portuguese restaurant he ran in New York for more than a decade. Until the doors open, November is a target date only.

Further out, Boston Magazine reported that The Shell Bar, a seafood restaurant from Saltie Girl owner Kathy Sidell's team, is planned for 550 Tremont Street around spring 2027, with Sidell Hospitality culinary director Matthew Gaudet working on the menu. It shares a street number with the Power Station but sits on Tremont, not Harrison. The Shell Bar is part of next year's calendar.

December ends in a square

The order runs through December. The last First Friday of 2026 falls on December 4, when 450 and 460 Harrison open their studios one more time from 5 to 9 p.m. Two days later, on Sunday, December 6, the Worcester Square Neighborhood Association holds its 64th annual tree lighting in Worcester Square from 5 to 6:30 p.m. On December 12 the Mills Gallery exhibitions close. The Power Station closes at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, stays closed Christmas Day, and ends its run on December 27.

That's six weeks from the last Sunday on Thayer Street to the market's final day, and the year's last First Friday at 450 Harrison lands inside them.

Our team spends a lot of time on these blocks, and we enjoy trading notes on new tables and evening plans as much as anything we do.
